The US mobile phone market set for a revolution?

December 05, 2006
Since the recent decision by the U.S. Copyright Office to allow U.S. consumers to use special software and services to unlock their handsets, the 'floodgates' have opened, forcing manufacturers to adapt, signified by Nokia's recent release of models that will among the first in the U.S. that can be used with any network. This will undoubtedly be a challenge for U.S. Carriers, who have for years held a tight grip on what their customers could and could not do.

This has thus changed the market and begun what many are calling; ' the unlocked age.' Such has been the anticipation of these recent events, that both Nokia and Sony Ericsson have, since earlier this year, been quietly selling unlocked phones, both of which were preceded by Motorola, the largest handset manufacturer in the U.S. The changes that are afoot mean that it will be a very exciting time for cellular traders in the U.S. and it will be interesting to see how it will ultimately change the market. In any case, we think this can only be good news for distributors and retailers in the US, and exporters in Europe and Asia targeting the US market.
