Handset market updates
South Korean Market Opens to Foreign Smartphones
The Korean Communications Commission has announced that it is abolishing the law that previously required the software used on mobile phones there to be adapted to the country's own standardized wireless internet platform, WIPI (Wireless Internet Platform Interoperability). The costs of customization for one country made it cost-prohibitive for many handset vendors to do business in South Korea. Another consequence is that prices for mobile phones in South Korea are higher are generally higher than in other countries.
Samsung, LG and Pantech are currently the dominant manufacturers in South Korea, but next year things are sure to change. The Blackberry Bold 9000 will be marketed to corporate users by local wireless provider SK Telecom Co. starting on December 29, while others are expected to launch in April 2009, when the general restriction is lifted.
That's when we expect to see a surge in demand for iPhones, Blackberrys and other top smartphones. Handset prices are also likely to fall, forced down by the entrance of new players in the previously-closed market.
Don't miss the chance to do business in the newly-opened South Korean market. If you're interested, let us know. We can help you!
