India emerges as a unique market for the cellular handset industry

November 24, 2006

According to a recent report by the financial management and advisory firm, Merrill Lynch, India's cellular handset industry has followed a very different trend compared to previously emerging markets. In the case of India, most handsets sold are done so via retailers rather than being affiliated with specific network operators.

The buying process in India has taken on two phases, with the consumer purchasing an unsubsidized handset from a third party retailer and then separately buying a GSM SIM card and connection.

Though the trend of Nokia domination continues in India like in many other geographical regions, with the manufacturer succeeding in gaining nearly 80% of the market due to their early roll-out of retail partnerships which coincided with the expanding coverage of local network operators. This has come at a cost to Motorolla who was unable to gain the same market share due in part to the basic standard of low end handsets sold.

Interesting market indeed; according to many estimates India should become the 2nd market for handsets after China. For all of you exporters out there, it makes sense to pay attention and find some solid local importers. As ever, gsmExchange is putting resources into this market for your ultimate benefit!
